Hurricane Katrina
Thousands upon thousands of people have been
left homeless by Hurricane Katrina. Local United
Ways are taking the lead to coordinate and fund
human services for evacuees from the Gulf Coast
states.
United Way of North Essex took immediate
action by convening a meeting of over 50
community organizations and leaders including
the local Red Cross, Salvation Army, Public
Schools, Township and County officials,
including health and welfare departments, Junior
League, HomeCorp, local houses of worship,
Police and Fire officials, Human Needs Food
Pantry, mental health groups, and interested
citizens. At the meeting, a coordinated plan of
action was established to address the urgent
needs of these families.
The United Way is serving as the lead in this
collaborative effort. People in the community
can make donations to United Way of North Essex
with a line in the memo box designating
Hurricane Katrina. 100% of these donated dollars
will go to support short and long-term relief
for these local displaced families.
