Money for Working Families: Make Tax Time Pay for You!

There are Tax Benefits for People Who Work. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a federal and New Jersey state wage supplement for low-income working families and individuals. You could get as much as $4,400.00 with the Earned Income Credit (EIC) and Child Tax Credit.  Here’s how it works …

Workers who were raising children in their homes and who earned less than $35,263* in 2005 can receive an EIC up to $4,400. (Workers raising one child who earned less than $31,030* can receive an EIC up to $2,662.) But you must file a federal tax return.

Workers eligible for the Earned Income Credit and the Child Tax Credit can see their hard work pay off at tax time. These tax credits can provide a substantial income boost and help families and individuals meet a number of goals, such as paying bills, establishing a savings account or purchasing a car. But, eligible workers won’t be able to claim these credits if they don’t know about them.

Last year over 2000 lower-income working families from suburban Essex County were eligible to receive tax credits from the federal government. Only 350 did! United Way of North Essex is offering free tax filing assistance to local eligible residents with electronic tax filing completed by trained volunteers in 5 community sites in and around Montclair.

Don’t Miss out!

*If you are married, the income limit is $2,000 higher than this amount. Many married workers will get a larger EIC.
